The 36-acre property featuring historic "Building 50" is being
redeveloped by
The Minervini Group and is now known as "The Village at
Grand Traverse Commons".
It is one of the
largest historic rennovation projects in the nation and has been featured in
both TRAVERSE, Northern Michigan's
Magazine (April 2003) and Detroit's HOUR Magazine (December 2002).
Photographer Heidi Johnson also chronicled the history of the Traverse City
State Hospital in her book, "Angels in the Architecture, A Photographic Elegy
to an American Asylum" (2001, Great Lakes Books).
Gallery Fifty was
the first retail tenant in this historic part of the development, moving in
just months after the first restaurant, Trattoria Stella.
The 380,000 sq. ft.
building
is surrounded by several historic outbuildings and hundreds of acres of preserved
park land and woodland. It is just over a mile from Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse
Bay and Traverse City's downtown.
The "Southview" phase,
including roughly 45,000 sq. ft. of Building 50 and the entire 25,000 sq. ft.
of Cottage 20 will be completed in early 2005. The Village at Grand Traverse
Commons is a mixed-use development and includes retail, restaurant, office and
residential tenants.
