ROBERT HELD, Glass
Heat, and the ever-present danger of glass exploding would seemingly be the glassblower's lament. But for Robert Held, these hazards, as part of the process, share in his magnetism to the ancient art.
After working his way through a maze of art mediums and collecting countless awards enroute, Held discovered the art of glassblowing and grasped tightly to this fragile yet physical art form.
Inspired by artists like Monet, Klimt, Tiffany, and even the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Held's collections are at the same time classic and modern. Using techniques dating back 2000 years, he fuses copper and stainless steel with glass. He creates texture using glass shards and threads of molten glass, and adds layer upon layer of color, for an unveiling of sensual and tangible creations.
Robert Held collections include ornaments, vases, bowls, paperweights and goblets that grace Queen Elizabeth's table. "It is an incomparable experience," says Held, "This fickle, molten mass will allow itself to be coaxed only by those who know its language." Held is, without question, bilingual. - Monterey Wheeler
